Steve Sweeney, a dedicated public servant and labor leader, has devoted his career to advocating for New Jersey's working families and vulnerable communities. Born in Camden and raised in Pennsauken, Steve's journey began as a union ironworker, where he learned the value of hard work and solidarity. ​ His personal life took a pivotal turn when his daughter, Lauren, was born prematurely with Down syndrome. This experience deepened his commitment to public service, inspiring him to champion the rights of individuals with disabilities and their families. ​ Steve's political career commenced with his election to the Gloucester County Board of Chosen Freeholders in 1997, where he served until 2010. In 2002, he was elected to the New Jersey State Senate, representing the 3rd Legislative District, a position he held until 2021. During his tenure, Steve was elected Senate President in 2009, becoming the longest-serving Senate President in New Jersey's history. ​ Steve's leadership is characterized by his practical approach to governance, focusing on fiscal responsibility while advancing progressive policies.
