What is an Absentee Ballot (Vote-by-Mail)?
Traditionally, an absentee ballot allowed registered voters to cast their votes by mail if they could not be physically present at their polling location on Election Day. In New Jersey, this process has evolved into the Vote-by-Mail system, making it accessible to all registered voters, regardless of their location or circumstances.

Vote-by-mail ensures every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate in elections, even if life gets in the way. Whether you're traveling, working late, caring for family, or simply prefer the convenience, this method ensures no one misses their chance to cast their vote.
How to Apply for a Vote-by-Mail Ballot in New Jersey
Applying for a Vote-by-Mail ballot in New Jersey is simple:
Visit the New Jersey Division of Elections: Head to NJ Voter Information Portal to download the application form or learn more about the process.
Submit Your Application: Complete the application and send it to your county clerk. Applications can be submitted in person or via mail.
Deadlines:
The deadline to apply by mail for a Vote-by-Mail ballot is 7 days before Election Day.
You can apply in person at your county clerk’s office until 3:00 PM before Election Day.
Complete and Return Your Ballot: Once you receive your ballot, fill it out carefully and return it by:
Mailing it back (must be postmarked by Election Day and received by 6 days after Election Day).
Dropping it in a secure drop box in your county by 8:00 PM on Election Day.
Delivering it to your county Board of Elections.
